Frequently Asked Questions
What does Remborde mean?
Remborde is when they take the leather, wrap it around the edge and sew it that way. It joins the upper and lining leather without any seam making the band last longer. It guarantees protection against external influences.
What is the difference between Waterproof and Water Resistant?
Waterproof means it can be submerged in water and is meant to get wet. Water Resistant means it can only tolerate small splash and is not meant for water use.
If a band is waterproof will there be dry time for that watch strap?
Yes, most waterproof watch bands will absorb water and require dry time.
What is a squeeze end band?
When a band is labeled 18-22mm squeeze end it means that the watchband has a spring loaded end that will compress from 18mm, 19, 20mm, 21mm to 22mm. A squeeze end band is very convenient because it fits many different size lugs (where the band attaches to the watch) or watches.
What is a lug?
Lugs are the part of the watch where the band attaches.
Can the buckle be removed from the band?
Yes, the buckles are held on by a simple spring bar (spring loaded bar) the same bar that attaches the band to the watch. All you have to do is compress the spring bar, tug the buckle a bit and the buckle will pop right off.
What is a spring bar?
A spring bar is a spring loaded stainless steel pin. The ends of a spring bar will compress enough so that you can install/remove the band on a watch or take a buckle on or off of a watchband.
What is a buckle?
A buckle is the part of the watch that keeps the band closed.
What does it mean when a band tappers?
When the side of the band that attaches to the watch (lugs) is 22mm and the buckle (where the band closes) is 22mm it means there is no tapper it is a straight band. When lugs are 22mm and the buckle is 20mm it means there is a slight tapper. If the lug end is 22mm and the buckle end is 14mm there is a larger tapper.
What if I have odd size lugs like 19mm and I can’t find a watch band I like in that size?
I always recommend going up ONE size if that band is soft enough by the lugs (where the band attaches to the watch) to fit a 19mm watch. So I would recommend a 20mm band. When I say soft I don’t mean the band has to be soft I mean the lug area of the watchband needs to be soft enough to compress down 1mm. Some leather bands are just too stiff and some have tubes in the ends where the spring bar goes so it will not compress. Other straps will fit just fine. Rubber and silicone bands are almost always perfect for going down 1mm. Most Metal bands can be grinded down with a dermal tool 1mm to fit. The other straps need to be checked to see if they will fit.
What band size do I need to fit my watch?
To determine your required band size, measure the distance (in millimeters) between the lugs (where strap attaches to your watch) of your watch.
How do I measure my watch strap?
A watch band is always measured end to end excluding a watch and the buckle. Only the leather part of the strap gets measured. You can also measure the tip side (part with holes) and the buckle side (shorter side that had buckle attached to it). Then add the two side together.
How do I know what length band I need?
You will need to know your wrist measurement. You can do with a soft tape measure that you can get from any fabric store, or in a cheap sewing kit. Now measure, as lose, or as tight, as you wear a watch. Now subtract the length of the watch from spring bar hole to spring bar hole in the watch case (That is length you no longer need due to the length of the watch). This is the usable length of the band you need.
How do I know how long my band will need to be?
Most men's regular size bands (7 1/2 inches to 7 7/8 inches) fit most men just fine. When you install your watch on your band the perfect fit is when the buckle closes right in the middle hole of the strap.
How long is a men’s regular strap?
All of Hirsch men's regular length straps are 200mm or 7 7/8 inches. They are measured end to end excluding a watch and the buckle, only measuring the leather.

Can you make a metal watchband longer or shorter?
Place band on its side (with arrows on inside of band pointing down) on top of a couple of pieces of cardboard….Now, prepare by cutting a straight piece from a paperclip.
Now take that piece, place on top of the pin in the link, and tap with a hammer. Pin will punch into cardboard. You can use a pair of pliers, and now easily pull the pin the rest of the way out, make adjustments, then put pins back in the way they came out, and finish by tapping with hammer.
What is a folded link construction watch band?
When the link on a band is wrapped around itself instead of poured in a mold to make a solid link. You can sometimes see the swirl on the side of the link when it is folded link construction however many manufactures are now capping the ends or finishing them so your new metal bracelet has a nice finished look to it making it difficult to tell by the eye that it is folded link construction.
How do I install or adjust my new vintage ring end cord bracelet.
The vintage cord bands have a buckle that you open. If you have not used one of these before you may want to have a jeweler show you. To open, put your fingernail under the latch, and pull open. Then there is another latch lock that you also open.
To make length adjustments you will need to release where the cord goes into the buckle. There is a small pry bar you lift to open (you can use a small screwdriver or sewing needle) releases the cable for threading through the watch and then cut with cutters to fit your wrist then install cable back under pry bar, and push down tight with thumb. That’s it!
What is the difference between the fold over deployant buckle and the butterfly deployant buckle?
Both deployants work with typical straps. This means, in the case of the BKL300 that the folding clasp part must approach the front of the wrist, instead of the back, as you would expect. No big deal. Just need to know when installing. The BKL300 is also lighter as it is a snap on, snap off (compression clasp). The BKL300 fold over deployment can also be a bit uncomfortable for someone with a smaller wrist due to the way the buckle is made. Where the butterfly (BKL100) is heavier due to its parts, but its folding parts sit in the center of the wrist. It has push buttons that open the buckle to the right and left. The BKL100 is better for people with larger hands as it opens bigger making it easier to take your watch off. I would say the BKL300 is the most popular, and the Push button is the most luxurious.
How thick of a strap will the push button butterfly BKL100 deployant buckle fit?
When talking about thickness please take the measurement by the hole on your watchband. (NOT BY THE LUGS WHERE THE BAND ATTACHES TO THE WATCH) The holes are where the buckle needs to close to hold your band shut; this is the important place to get the thickness. The BKL100 will tolerate a band up to 5mm thick by the holes.
How thick of a strap will the fold over compression BKL300 deployant buckle fit?
When talking about thickness please take the measurement by the hole on your watchband. (NOT BY THE LUGS WHERE THE BAND ATTACHES TO THE WATCH) The holes are where the buckle needs to close to hold your band shut; this is the important place to get the thickness. The BKL300 will tolerate a band up to 4.5mm thick by the holes.
How thick of a strap will the BKL200 deployant buckle fit?
When talking about thickness please take the measurement by the hole on your watchband. (NOT BY THE LUGS WHERE THE BAND ATTACHES TO THE WATCH) The holes area is where the buckle needs to close to hold your band shut; this is the important place to get the thickness. The BKL200 will tolerate a band up to 2mm thick by the holes. If you try to get this buckle on a thicker strap the buckle will not say closed.
What is an open ended band?
Some lugs are fixed meaning the bar that holds the watch band onto the watch cannot come off. Most watches have simple springbars that can be removed for band replacement needs. When you have fixed lugs you need an open ended band you can wrap around the fixed bar and glue shut. The band will need to be cut to be removed from the watch.
How do I close my open ended band?
You want to go to Home Depot or Wal-Mart prob. Home Depot best. Go to glue section and get a product called Dap weld wood contact cement. It should be in a brown bottle with a red label. (You want the one that stink’s the others won’t work.) It will come with a lid with a brush on it but don't use that brush to apply the glue to the band you will want to use a tooth pick.
1st measure the band, fit your watch to the band and cut how you want.
2nd dip tooth pick in glue and rub on the band where it is shiny. That is old glue that will be activated by the new glue you are putting on now. Let stand 10 to15 sec to activate the glue.
3rd squeeze band together and hold 5 to10 sec. once closed that’s it your open ended band will not open again. It will need to be cut off to remove the strap.
How long should a band last?
This is a very difficult question. A leather band that is worn every day and through the hot summer will have a life span of 1 to 1.5 years. Really depends on how much and how you wear your strap. A band that is worn often with little summer use will last 2 plus years. Again really depending on how often you wear the band and what you are doing while wearing it. A watchband that has light wear and a deployant buckle on it can last 5 plus years easily.
Can you put extra holes in my band?
I do have a tool that will punch a very small hole in a leather watch band however the hole punch on my tool is one size fits all and will not match the current holes on your strap. The holes are not perfect and once modification are made to the leather strap it is considered custom and can no longer be returned for a refund or a credit.
Does a deployment buckle make my band longer or shorter?
No a deployment buckle does not add extra length to a watch band. No a deployment buckle does not shorten the length of a watch band.
Does a deployment buckle extend the life of my band?
Yes, No doubt about it a deployment buckle can add YEARS of life to your strap. When you install a deployment buckle you eliminate the need to hitch your regular tang buckle every time to take your watch on and off of your wrist. A regular tang buckle requires more action causing excessive wear to the leather.
How do I open my deployment buckle?
If you need to adjust your buckle so you can move it to a different hole on your watch band you can turn the buckle on its side. You will see a small dot on one side of the buckle. That small dot is the hinge of the buckle. On the opposite side of the hinge use your fingers and pull up and away from the buckle. The buckle will open just like a door.
Does a deployant buckle work on a NATO band?
Yes, the buckle can be removed from a NATO strap so a deployant clasp can be installed but please keep me mind the keepers that hold the band down are metal and those cannot be change so if you want a black buckle or something that does not match the current keepers it will not match the new buckle.
Do you need a tool for removal or installation of a strap?
You do not need a tool for removal or installation a thumb tack and other items around your house can be used. However a spanner tool can make the job a bit easier for you.
Can I ship you my watch so you can install the band for me?
No! Due to liability reasons, under no circumstance am I able to receive or will I ever take a watch for any reason. If you need help or are unsure of anything please take it to a local jeweler. They can measure your watch to determine what size replacement band you need. You may also check out my measurement section on the website.
What is the difference between a curved end and straight end watch?
When you have a straight end watch it will only accept straight end bands. The curve ends will not fit. When you have a curved end watch you can put a curved end band or a straight end strap on. Please refer to the measurement section for pictures.
How do I install my NATO Band?
You just remove the long piece from the ring of the shorter piece. This area is where your watch will sit. With the end of the strap facing the same direction as your watch, thread the long piece down through the lugs starting on the top (between your watch and the spring bar) and up from the bottom through the lugs and spring bar. Insert the long piece into the ring of the short piece and tight the slack.
(This part is what keeps your watch in place) If you have too much length left on the end of your NATO band you can tuck it back in to the keepers.

Top Leather is the same as the Lining Leather. There are three, (3), variations.
- For the MS892 it’s one piece of leather folded and glued & stitched
- Some items like MS855 and MS-2040 it’s just one piece of leather.
- Then like the MS890 is two pieces of the same leather and glued & stitched.
